Moving From Corporate To Entrepreneur Interview with Tiffany Ish

Moving From Corporate To Entrepreneur Interview with Tiffany Ish Today in my networking challenge I am interviewing Tiffany Ish.   Tiffany and her sister, Jen, started a jewelry design company called T+J Designs and Tiffany also blogs at I am Style-ish.  Thanks so much for sharing your advice with us Tiffany! In case you are reading this at work and can’t watch the video, you can read all of the great advice below about moving from corporate to entrepreneur! 1)  How did you decide to move from a corporate to entrepreneur path and start your own business? It was something that my sister and I had always talked about. My dad has always owned his own companies and we have always had the entrepreneurial spirit in us. I spent a long career in HR in the corporate world and I loved it but I always had this creative side to me. So that is why I started blogging because it was my creative outlet.  Everything just happened all at once.  We were talking about ideas and we were like lets just do jewelry because it is something that we love and we were never able to find jewelry. It was either really cheap and inexpensive or really high end.  We wanted to do a middle ground for women like us who were in their careers and didnt want to go to the teenage stores to buy their jewelry but also not spend $1,000 on jewelry.  My sister lives in Chicago and I live in Seattle so it is a very different working environment.  We are always on Skype, on email and texting.  Thank goodness for technology.  A lot of our manufacturers are overseas. [Related Post:  How to Go From Employee to Entrepreneur Successfully] 2) Your mom had a special role in starting your own business, can you tell me more about that? I get all of my style from my mom. She has always been the most stylish woman that I know. She has always inspired me in my style. My mom is very stylish but she dresses appropriately for her age. I feel like that is very important. She wears a lot of our jewelry, but she knows that some of the jewelry for the younger crowd is not for her. That is how I try to dress too, appropriate for my age but still stylish and going along with my personality. My mom has amazing jewelry and has always loved jewelry. [Related Post:  5 Essentials For Minimalist Work Fashion] 3) What is the hardest part of having your own business that you didnt expect? For me, my whole career has been in the corporate world. The business side wasnt hard because I had worked in the corporate side previously. It is the retail side that is harder for me and understanding what our customer wants and the price points and the quality. We just started in August so we are still moving things along with learning and experiencing. Going into a completely different arena than I have been in and starting a new business. 4) What did you do previously? I was in human resources and consulting. In a way, I have a good business background because I have been able to create programs for companies. With the HR background, I understand how people think and what motivates them which goes along with buying and what motivates people to buy. A lot of times I run into people who are very creative but the business part they struggle with. I like running the numbers and running reports. I think you have to have both ends of the spectrum. Its also lucky for us because my sister has been in merchandising and she ran departments for big lines, and so we balance each other out. 5) How do you balance your personal life and your business? To be honest, it is very hard.  Owning your own business is a lot about networking.  I have been going to events almost every day of the week.  I do see my husband less because at night I am out networking.  Its hard but if you have a partner who is comfortable with it and he knows that this is what I want to do.  Its one of those things that you sacrifice a little bit so that you can continue moving your business forward. 6) How do you recommend that we accessorize our work outfits? We do a lot of great statement pieces so you dont have to feel like you have to layer.  In a lot of professional environments, you dont want to wear anything that is super loud, bright or makes a lot of noise. I call them simple, statement pieces where they stand out and you notice them. 7) I love your motto of offering affordable glamor for everyday life. How can we be glamorous on a budget? I think investing in those statement pieces is so important. So if you love rings go out and buy a big beautiful ring and just wear that one. You dont have to change it up every day. Just wear that one because it is kind of like your statement and your signature piece. Or a necklace, these days you can find stuff that is affordable.  We want to bring really good quality jewelry and a great design but at a great price as well.  If you look at our website, everything is less than $100 which is really reasonable and something that I look for. 8 ) This question I ask at the end of all of my interviews, what do you wish you would have known when you were a young professional woman just starting out in her career? I had this crazy idea that I was going to stay in my position forever and keep on working up that corporate ladder. It was really set in my mind that this is what I was going to do for the rest of my life. I never expected to move from a corporate to entrepreneur path. My advice would be to keep your options open and if you want to do something else, it is OK to stray from that path. I thought that you go to college, get a corporate job and then work it up to be a director or executive. Now that I am out of that environment, it is so much more fulfilling for me to be doing something that I am genuinely passionate about.  I can put everything into it.  I work a lot but its not like working. Its fun! Definitely keep your options open even if you dont think it is possible, its possible. Go and do it. 9) Where can people find out more about you online? All of our jewelry is at tplusjdesigns.com.  We love connecting with our customers and readers. Thanks so much for talking to us about how to move from a corporate to entrepreneur business!

Commodity - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Resume Personal Branding Best Practices Part 2 - Superior/Commodity - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Weve all been taught to create one multi-purpose resume that could be used for any job we might apply for. This strategy worked before the days of digital resumes, job boards, online applications, and applicant tracking systems. It worked when there were shortages of candidates. Branding yourself as a commodity just isnt good enough anymore When you combine the technological changes that have transformed hiring practices with job changes, the one-size-fits-all resume strategy doesnt work well anymore. In yesterdays job market, you just had to get close to get a good job In todays job market, you have to present yourself as an exact match in order to even get interviews. Contrast this with how todays job seekers brand yourselves. Todays job seekers are unfamiliar with customizing resumes, so most of you use a personal brand that describes you as a commodity candidate one whos qualified to do many things. This was fine when being close was good enough when you could wait until an interview to show youre an exact fit. But it wont work when you need to show youre an exact fit in order to even get interviews in the first place. How most candidates brand yourselves as commodities Most job seekers cant help but brand themselves as a commodity because its how weve all been taught. Weve been taught by our college placement office to make ourselves look just like everyone else, which helps brand the college as the provider of a consistent quality of worker. Weve been taught by government, community, church and alumni resources, by outplacement, even most recruiters, career coaches and career authors. Weve been taught to create a general introduction that tells the employer why we might be good for many opportunities, rather than brand ourselves as the superior candidate for that specific opportunity. How most candidates brand themselves: Objective statements: When there are many qualified candidates, like today, employers dont care what your objective is. They dont care what you want, until they are ready to make you a job offer by that time, theyve asked. Creating a first impression about what you want doesnt tell the employer why youre the perfect candidate for their position it just makes you look like everyone else. Profile and summary sections: Profile and summary sections brand you as a commodity by their very nature because the entire intent of profile/summary sections are to throw a bunch of stuff against the wall to see what sticks. This random branding doesnt differentiate you from 99% of the other candidates who do the exact same thing. Key skills section: Throwing up a bunch of key skills brands you as a commodity. How could it possibly brand you as a superior candidate? The whole reason you have a key skills section at the beginning of your resume is because you dont know what that employer is looking for, so instead you dump a laundry list of skills, crossing your fingers and hoping that you match some of the employers needs. What you can do instead to brand yourself as a superior candidate Start out by forgetting what youve been taught about resumes. Youve been taught to brand yourself as a commodity when it didnt matter because there was such a shortage of skilled candidates that you could get a job just by random job search methods. If you sent enough of the same resume to enough people, you could get close, which was enough to get you a job. Instead use these steps to brand yourself as the superior candidate for the job: Superior information: The better the information you have about your target employer and hiring manager the better you can brand yourself as a superior candidate. Even though we were taught to use publicly available information on Google, company websites and job descriptions, its inferior. You can find superior information by talking to people within the employer and hiring managers department. Choose the right information: All employer information is not created equal. When you first learn the hiring managers priorities, you can emphasize the problems that youve already solved that are similar to the hiring managers priorities. To a hiring manager, a superior candidate has already solved problems that are similar to the hiring managers priority problems. Timing: Gaining this information before you customize your resume is critical. Most candidates dont do much research until they prepare for interviews after already branding themselves as a commodity. Most candidates dont talk to people inside the hiring managers department until they interview. You dont have to be most candidates by gaining this information early in the process, you give yourself the best chance at branding yourself as a superior candidate. So ask yourself do you really want to go the traditional route and brand yourself as a commodity? Or will you break new ground and brand yourself as a superior candidate? That Tweet About My Boss Wasnt Such a Good Idea - CareerAlley

That Tweet About My Boss Wasn’t Such a Good Idea - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Its true: You could get fired due to misuse of social media. Take a look at a long list of terminations due to social media, and youll see that one misstep can mean the difference between employed and unemployed. Not only will you need to be careful on social media in order to keep your job but you should also do the same if you want to get your next dream job. Your (Future) Employer is Watching It is quite normal for employers to keep track of what their employees are doing on social networks. If you decide to tweet about your boss he or she has a decent chance of seeing it. Lauren Fisher reports that 44 percent of companies track their employees on social media, according to a survey. But this isnt just their use in the office, though. The number is true for what happens inside and outside of the office. Job seekers should also take note of the numbers. Erik Sherman notes that one in 10 young job hunters have been rejected due to their social media posts. Those between the ages of 16 and 34 are particularly at risk for having their Facebook or Twitter account get in the way of their job search. A staggering 91 percent of hiring managers used social networks to screen possible employees, reports Sherman in a separate survey. Using Social Media Carefully There is some common sense that should be used with social media. After all, a derogatory comment made towards a boss or customer could easily lead to termination. This is especially the case with some industries. Healthcare, education, and customer service industries have made for popular news stories with employee terminations due to social media. Visibility remains a key issue for social media posts that can be seen by the public. Checking your companys policy on social media can save you from an unfortunate incident. Some frown upon or even ban its use at the office, while others look upon it positively for networking, team building, and for marketing purposes. Even if it is the latter case, you should make sure social media does not undermine your productivity keep your social media breaks separate from your work. Finding the Purpose for Social Media at Work Maintaining balance is key for being able to use social media effectively at work. Perhaps it can be a positive thing for your job and career. If your company is OK with it, use social media networks to get ahead. From troubleshooting a bug with a company on Twitter to some graphic inspiration on Pinterest, good can come from social media in an office setting. Perhaps you can communicate effectively to co-workers with a Facebook group. Maintain that balance for the best results. Remember that it should not be a distraction to your work day, and it should never jeopardize your relationship with your boss, co-workers, customers, or anyone. Think twice before posting anything negative at all. After all, your boss may see it. About the Author: Brian Neese is an author that specializes in content marketing, social media, and SEO.
